Stump Grinding
We grind stumps completely — no regrowth, no tripping hazard, no eyesore. Serving Alameda County since 2009.
After a tree is removed, the stump that remains can create real problems over time. Stumps attract wood-boring beetles, carpenter ants, and termites — insects that can eventually find their way into nearby structures. Decaying stumps also become hosts for fungal diseases that can spread to healthy trees and shrubs in your yard. And practically speaking, a stump in the middle of a lawn creates a tripping hazard and makes mowing and landscaping a constant inconvenience.
Stump grinding is the cleanest, fastest solution. At Valero Brothers Tree Care, we use commercial-grade grinding equipment to reduce stumps to below-grade wood chips — leaving your yard level and ready for replanting, grass seed, or hardscaping. We serve all of Alameda County and the East Bay, including Fremont, Hayward, Oakland, San Leandro, and beyond.
We frequently combine stump grinding with tree removal, making it easy to handle the entire job in one visit. Ask us about bundle pricing when you call for your free estimate.
How deep does stump grinding go?
We typically grind 6–10 inches below the surrounding soil surface. If you plan to plant a new tree or lay sod in that area, let us know and we can grind deeper to ensure clean soil for healthy new growth.
Will the stump grow back after grinding?
No. Grinding destroys the tissue and cambium at and below the crown of the stump. Surface roots may still push up suckers for a season or two — we can advise on treatments to prevent this if needed.
What tree stumps are most common in Alameda County?
We grind all species: coast live oak, blue oak, eucalyptus, liquidambar, Chinese elm, Monterey pine, fruit trees, and ornamentals. Hardwoods like oak take more time but our equipment handles them without issue.
Do I need to do anything with the wood chips left behind?
Wood chips from grinding make excellent mulch. You can spread them around garden beds to retain moisture and suppress weeds. If you prefer, we can haul them away entirely — just ask.
